In butter, sauté 2 thinly sliced yellow onions until brown.
Season with salt and pepper and spread over the bottom of a gratin
dish.
Peel and cube squash and sauté in butter until tender. Place
atop the onions. Cover with 1 cup grated Swiss cheese, pour 1 ½
cup of warm milk over the top. Top with a layer of 4 cups of bread
cubes. Cover with foil and bake at 325 for 1 hour or until squash
is tender. Remove for and bake another 20 minutes. Let settle and
serve.
